The US may make certain announcements during the day following the meeting of the US president’s special representative, Steve Witkoff, with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, according to a statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a meeting with Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Đurić.

Rubio was asked whether the US might impose sanctions on Russia following Witkoff’s meeting with Putin.

The Secretary of State responded that Witkoff is already returning from Moscow and had a conversation with the special envoy.

"We will have some further discussions throughout the day, and hopefully, some announcements will be made, so we’ll see. Maybe positive, maybe not," Rubio added.

Witkoff’s meeting with Putin

The US president’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, visited Moscow today, August 6, and met with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. The meeting lasted about three hours.

Western media called the meeting a "last chance" for Russia before possible US sanctions and tariffs. President Donald Trump promised to take such measures if the Kremlin did not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine by August 8.

After the talks, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said that Witkoff and Putin exchanged signals related to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Notably, earlier, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Russia might agree to a ceasefire in the air with Ukraine in order to make concessions to Trump.
