The United States has decided to deploy an additional strike group to the Middle East. It will include thousands of Marines, The Wall Street Journal reports.
According to the outlet, the US is strengthening its presence in the Middle East amid an increase in Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran is seeking to paralyze the movement of oil tankers.
As the WSJ sources reported, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has already approved a request from US Central Command to deploy an element of an amphibious strike group along with an attached Marine expeditionary unit.
Such a formation usually includes several warships and about 5,000 Marines.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump believes it is unlikely that Iranians will rise up against the regime in the near future. According to him, he would "feel it in my bones" when the time comes to end the war with Iran.
The decision to deploy additional forces to the Middle East was made after a KC-135 refueling aircraft was shot down over western Iraq. All six crew members have died. Hegseth assured that there would be no mercy for the Iranian regime.
US and Israeli operation against Iran
At the end of February, the United States and Israel carried out powerful strikes against Iran, which resulted in the elimination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran began attacking neighboring countries where foreign military bases are located and also blocked the Strait of Hormuz, an extremely important route for transporting oil.
The US-Israeli operation has been ongoing for several weeks. Recently, the American leader stated that the war is practically over.
