The US considers its own security guarantees more important than those of Europe, even though Washington rules out sending its troops to Ukraine, according to Politico.
The outlet reports that a senior US official on Saturday essentially downplayed the significance of Europe’s initial commitments to Ukraine, emphasizing that American security guarantees are what really matter:
“The Coalition of the Willing efforts are nice. They had a couple helicopters and a couple troops and a couple guarantees here and there, but if you speak to the Ukrainians, it’s really the American security guarantees that matter,” the official told reporters.
Politico also reports that US President Donald Trump reiterated that the US will not send its troops into Ukraine, but will continue to provide assistance.
According to officials from the US Department of Defense, American commitments will likely include satellite and intelligence support, occasional drone flights to monitor the front lines, and logistical assistance.
Talks in Abu Dhabi
The peace talks between the US, Ukraine, and Russia in Abu Dhabi have concluded. While the Ukrainian side reports a constructive dialogue, the issue of territories remains unresolved. The Kremlin insists on the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas, but Kyiv is firmly opposed.
US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff spoke positively about the Abu Dhabi talks and added that the parties agreed to continue negotiations next week.
The next round of trilateral talks is expected to take place on February 1.
