The United States has proposed restoring the work of the NATO-Russia Council as part of peace negotiations aimed at resolving the war in Ukraine, Bloomberg reports.

According to the agency, Russia is avoiding the US proposal for a ceasefire, which would involve freezing the conflict, recognizing Crimea as Russian, and lifting sanctions.

At the same time, a Bloomberg source reported that the United States has prepared a new idea that could appeal to Russia. Specifically, the US added new elements to the proposal, including the restoration of security talks within the framework of the NATO-Russia Council.

The NATO-Russia Council was established after the Cold War to facilitate bilateral cooperation on security issues. It effectively ceased operations following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022

Ukraine-Russia talks in Istanbul

Today, May 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Türkiye to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who, while ignoring the ceasefire proposal, suggested resuming direct talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul.

Zelenskyy emphasized that he would first meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara and would wait for the Russian leader.

However, according to Russian officials and media, Putin is unlikely to attend the talks. He has instead sent a delegation to Istanbul.

As of now, the meeting has not been officially confirmed.
