Meanwhile, Yemeni rebel media reported more than a dozen airstrikes on April 16, targeting the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa. They blamed the United States for the strikes.
“Fourteen airstrikes carried out by American aggression hit the Al-Hafa area in the Al-Sabeen district in the capital,” the Houthis’ Al-Masirah TV reports.
Strikes were also reported in the Hazm district of the Al-Jawf province.
US operation against Yemeni Houthis
The Houthis are an Islamic group that considers itself part of the "axis of resistance" against Israel, the US, and Western countries under Iranian leadership. To date, the militants control most of northern and western Yemen.
Since the fall of 2023, the militants have been attacking civilian commercial ships in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea with drones and rockets, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
Since March 15, the US began airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. According to official statements from Washington, the operation was launched to halt Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.
In response, the Houthis fired missiles and drones at the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.
The US responded with more destructive bombings across Yemeni provinces.
US President Donald Trump stated that the Houthis had suffered significant losses and now seek peace.
