US military destroyed several Houthi drones in Yemen that posed immediate threat
US military personnel have eliminated three drones in a rebel-held area of Yemen. The American side perceived these drones as a threat, particularly to coalition forces and commercial ships, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
In updated information from the US military agency, it is stated that the operation took place within the last 24 hours.
"In the past 24 hours, US Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces successfully destroyed three Iranian-backed Houthi uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) in a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen," the post reads.
The statement from Centcom indicates that these UAVs were identified as posing a direct threat to US forces, coalition forces, and commercial vessels in the region.
"These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure," added the US military agency.
Houthi attacks on ships and the US-led operation to protect maritime navigation
Since the autumn of last year, Yemeni Houthis have intensified aerial attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The militants justified these actions by supporting the Hamas organization. In response to a major terrorist attack on Israel in October 2023, Israel launched a military operation.
Subsequently, US military personnel, alongside the coalition, began measures to protect civilian ships in the region. Additionally, Western allies conducted a series of strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.
Earlier reports indicated that recently, US forces eliminated 3 unmanned boats of Yemeni Houthis in the Red Sea waters as part of self-defense. On July 4, American forces destroyed 2 unmanned surface vessels in the Red Sea and 1 Houthi radar station in Yemen.
About a week later, it became known that a Greek frigate prevented an attack by Houthis on a vessel in the Gulf of Aden.
