The new round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran has been postponed "for logistical reasons", said Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi.

"For logistical reasons, we are rescheduling the US-Iran meeting provisionally planned for Saturday, May 3rd," wrote the minister, who serves as a mediator in the negotiations.

He added that new dates will be announced following mutual agreement.

New US-Iran nuclear deal

During his first presidential term (2017–2021), Donald Trump withdrew the US from the original nuclear agreement and reinstated heavy sanctions on Iran, escalating tensions between the two countries.

After returning to the office, Trump stepped up efforts in March to negotiate a new nuclear deal with Iran. He warned of major strikes against the country’s nuclear facilities if Tehran refused to comply.

The US and Iran have already held three rounds of indirect talks mediated by Oman. The new agreement aims to block Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons while easing the harsh economic sanctions imposed by Washington.

Recently, the media reported that Iran may be willing to accept limits on uranium enrichment in exchange for US guarantees.

Following talks in Rome earlier this month, Oman stated that the US and Iran are working toward an agreement under which Tehran would be fully stripped of nuclear weapons and sanctions but would retain its ability to develop peaceful nuclear energy.

Ahead of the planned April 26 meeting in Oman, Iran proposed an interim deal to the US, which Washington declined to support.
