Iran told the US during talks last week that it is ready to accept certain limits on uranium enrichment, but it needs reliable guarantees that US President Donald Trump will not withdraw from the nuclear deal, according to Reuters.

Iran and the US plan to hold a second round of negotiations in Rome, a week after the first round of talks in Oman. Both sides described the discussions as positive.

Trump, who resumed the maximum pressure campaign against Tehran in February, withdrew from the 2015 nuclear pact between Iran and six world powers in 2018 during his first term and reinstated sanctions against Iran.

In recent years, Tehran has steadily crossed the boundaries of the 2015 nuclear agreement regarding its nuclear program, according to Reuters.

Tehran approached the negotiations cautiously, remaining skeptical that they could lead to a deal, and suspicious of Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to bomb Iran if it does not halt its accelerated uranium enrichment program.

Negotiations on Iran's nuclear program

Upon beginning his second presidential term, Donald Trump decided to pursue a new nuclear deal with Iran, after having torn up the previous agreement and reimposed sanctions during his first term from 2017 to 2021.

In early March, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing a new agreement. In the event of a refusal, the American leader threatened Tehran with massive strikes on the country’s territory, including sites linked to Iran’s nuclear program.

Khamenei initially responded that he had no desire to negotiate with arrogant powers and put Iran’s missile forces on full combat alert.

However, on April 11, under mounting pressure, the Iranian leader changed his stance and agreed to negotiations with the UD.
