US held vice presidential candidates' debate, Ukraine was not discussed
In the United States, a debate took place between vice-presidential candidates Tim Walz (Democratic Party) and J.D. Vance (Republican Party). Topics included the situation in the Middle East and the country's economy, but not Ukraine, citing the BBC.
As the BBC writes, it was a relatively civilized 90-minute discussion on:
- Immigration;
- Economy;
- Abortion;
- Situation in the Middle East.
A significant amount of attention was devoted to immigration. Vance repeatedly returned to this issue, which is considered a weak point for the Democrats. Eventually, his microphone was cut off after he began shouting over the moderators during a fact-check.
The first question in the debate addressed the escalation in the Middle East, but the most heated discussion revolved around abortion rights. Vance argued that each state should make its own decision on the matter, while Walz insisted on restoring federal abortion rights.
During the debate, the candidates also commented on their controversial statements made in the past. For instance, Vance admitted he was wrong when he compared US presidential candidate Donald Trump to Hitler.
US election
This November, the United States will hold its presidential elections. The main contenders for the presidency remain former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris.
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the US, where he met with Trump and presented his plan for Ukraine's victory. The talks lasted about an hour. Following the meeting, the Republican expressed a desire to achieve a "fair deal" for all in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine.
More details on Zelenskyy's visit to the US can be found in RBC-Ukraine's report.
