By the end of 2025, Ukraine may purchase up to 800 million cubic meters of American liquefied natural gas (LNG). Thanks to a new route that could become operational as early as June, say RBC-Ukraine's sources.

It is expected that American LNG will be supplied via reverse flow from Greece through Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova, with the entry point into Ukraine's gas transmission system being the Hrebenyky gas metering station in the Odesa region. This route will allow for additional purchases of about 3 million cubic meters per day.

According to sources, imports via this route are currently planned until October. During this period, Ukraine could purchase about 400 million cubic meters. However, if deliveries continue, the volume could increase to 700–800 million cubic meters by the end of the year.

Previously, there were no supplies through the Trans-Balkan corridor due to high transit tariffs. However, operators from five countries have now agreed to reduce the overall tariff by 25%. As a result, the cost of gas transmission from Greece to Ukraine is expected to be competitive.

Sources familiar with the preparation of the first auction reported that Naftogaz, Ukraine's state-owned oil and gas company, is expected to purchase the gas. However, at the time of this report, the company had not provided a comment.

Earlier, it became known that American LNG purchases via the new route could begin soon. These are not the first shipments of liquefied gas from the US through Greece, as in December 2024, DTEK, one of Ukraine's largest private energy companies, purchased a batch of 100 million cubic meters.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine would be able to receive more gas through the Trans-Balkan corridor.

Ukraine's Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, stated that the country lost nearly half of its gas production due to attacks over the winter.
