US President Donald Trump has largely suspended direct financial and military aid to Ukraine. However, a victory by the Democratic Party in the upcoming elections could sharply change the situation, according to Reuters.

Recently, the head of the White House has faced a barrage of criticism from lawmakers, including Republicans, over the decision to ease restrictions on the supply of Russian diesel fuel and the refusal to impose sanctions on the Russian energy sector. Importantly, this occurred just weeks after the signing of the relevant laws.

However, in the event of a victory in the November midterm elections, Democrats will be able to control the congressional agenda and determine which bills to bring to a vote and when.

This, in particular, could allow them to approve a new aid package for Ukraine.

As Reuters has learned, the respective decision is likely to have sufficient bipartisan support to secure the two-thirds majority required to override a presidential veto.

Furthermore, Democrats may attempt to limit other Trump decisions in foreign policy.

For instance, Congressman Gregory Meeks from New York, who could chair the House Committee on Foreign Affairs if control of the chamber shifts to the Democrats, has introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at blocking the president's plan to return Russian diesel fuel to the global market.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported on whether Donald Trump and US First Lady Melania plan to visit Ukraine.
