US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called President Donald Trump's decision to temporarily ease sanctions pressure on Russia under the so-called diesel deal "very wise," reports NTV.

According to the US secretary of state, this should help increase energy supplies to the global market and affect prices.

Rubio explained that Washington wants to assess the impact of sanctions and tariffs on the global and US economies. This involves the possibility of obtaining a share of Russian diesel fuel supplies.

Rubio believes the president's decision to allow additional energy supplies onto the global market for a short period of time is very wise.

He added that this move could benefit not only other countries but also the United States, which is facing high diesel fuel prices.

According to Rubio, Russian diesel would have reached the global market regardless of Washington's decision. Therefore, it also matters what share of these supplies the US will be able to obtain.

Why Trump eased sanctions pressure on Russia

Rubio linked rising energy prices to several factors. These include the situation surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, as well as strikes on energy infrastructure during the Russia-Ukraine war.

According to the secretary of state, the Trump administration needs time to assess the economic consequences of sanctions and tariffs for the US and other countries. The president plans to use a 60-day period for this purpose.

Washington aims to weigh the potential impact of restrictions on global energy markets and the US economy.

US eases sanctions against Russia

Trump also decided to block the sanctions against Russia, which the late Senator Lindsey Graham had actively promoted and helped draft.

Kyiv had been persistently waiting for the US to approve these sanctions, but this did not happen. Moreover, days ago, Trump said he was confident that his decision to cancel the Graham sanctions was correct.

Furthermore, the media reported that Washington is preparing another easing of sanctions against Moscow. The next step after the diesel deal could be the lifting of restrictions on Russian fertilizer exports.
