US Congressmen call on Pentagon to transfer long-range ATACMS to Ukraine
A group of American congressmen from both parties has appealed to the United States Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, urging him to transfer long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, according to Ukrainian MP Yehor Cherniev from the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security.
In their statement, the congressmen call for transferring ATACMS missiles to our military and ask for help solving the problem of ammunition shortages. In particular, they call for a detailed explanation of the reasons for any obstacles to the immediate fulfillment or consideration of requests.
"I hope that after providing Ukraine with ATACMS missiles, Scholz (Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany) will have no arguments or room for maneuver left. If he needs any additional signal, we will try to provide it," Cherniev wrote.
The MP also noted that they specifically refer to long-range ATACMS missiles, which can fly almost 300 kilometers.
"Last time, the scheme with Leopard worked after the announcement of the transfer of Abams to us. We have support in Congress on this issue. We are waiting for the White House and the Pentagon to respond. We should try all methods. The word 'impossible' should not exist," Cherniev added.
ATACMS for Ukraine
Last year, Ukrainian soldiers struck at Russian airfields in Luhansk and Berdyansk. Information appeared in the media that the Armed Forces of Ukraine used American long-range ATACMS missiles for the strike, provided in small quantities. Later, the US confirmed this information. Washington clarified that they provided missiles with a range of up to 165 kilometers to our soldiers.
In October 2023, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that the supply of ATACMS to Ukraine would be ongoing.
Recently, the American publication NBC News reported that the White House is working to provide Ukraine with new powerful long-range ballistic missiles.
