The US may impose new sanctions on Russia to force it to cease fire. Washington is close to making such a decision, stated President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a briefing.

He noted that although a bill on sanctions has not yet been registered in Congress, "appropriate strong measures will be taken in the near future." According to the President, Ukraine is awaiting increased pressure on Russia from the US.

"Strengthening sanctions against the Russians for their refusal to end the war is definitely the first step toward a ceasefire. We are waiting for these steps. I know that America is close to taking appropriate actions. We’ll see if it happens. This is not a prophecy, just information that we have," the President stated.

Zelenskyy emphasized that he believes sanctions can impact Russia in terms of ending the war.

Trump's threats

Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that he was "angry" because Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed introducing a temporary administration under the UN's auspices in Ukraine.

As a result, the American leader threatened Russia with secondary tariffs on oil.

Just a few days later, Fox News, citing sources, reported that Trump accused Putin of delaying ceasefire negotiations. In this context, the US is considering strengthening sanctions.

Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously suggested the possibility of imposing maximum sanctions against Russia.
