US calls on Biden to allow Poland to shoot down missiles over Ukraine
Bipartisan leaders of the US Helsinki Commission have approached President Joe Biden with a request. They are urging him to grant Poland, a NATO ally, permission to intercept hostile missiles over Ukraine, citing The Hill.
According to the report, Republican Joe Wilson and Democrat Steve Cohen sent a letter to Biden asking him to empower Poland "to intercept and neutralize missiles over Ukraine, particularly those threatening to encroach upon Polish airspace."
Their request is based on Poland’s initiative to use its air defense systems and potentially expand its coverage to include not only Polish skies but also those over Ukraine.
This spring, during one of Russia's attacks on Ukraine, Russian missiles briefly entered Polish airspace.
Russian missiles over Poland
At the end of last year, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported a breach of its airspace by an unidentified object during a terrorist attack by Russia against Ukraine.
Later, Poland suggested that Russia might deliberately conduct operations or strikes near the Ukrainian-Polish border, as there are no military groupings stationed there.
This summer, it was revealed that Ukraine and Poland are discussing a mechanism allowing Poland’s air defenses to intercept Russian missiles over Ukraine as well.
