US and Iranian officials are discussing the possibility of a ceasefire. However, Washington is ready to take such a step under one condition, according to Axios correspondent Barak Ravid.
Information about the US-Iran ceasefire talks was disclosed to him by three unnamed US officials.
According to them, in return Washington wants Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, officials noted that it remains unclear whether the sides will be able to reach an agreement.
US-Iran ceasefire
The United States initially planned for its operation against Iran to last four weeks. However, that timeline has already been exceeded.
Earlier today, US President Donald Trump said that Iran had asked the United States for a ceasefire. According to him, the issue will be considered once the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.
Iranian officials have not yet confirmed Trump’s statement.
Yesterday, March 31, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iranian officials are in contact with their US counterparts, but this does not mean the countries are holding negotiations.
Notably, in recent days, Trump has tried to distance himself from the issue of reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said that countries receiving oil through the strait should be responsible for addressing it.
