Ukrainian doctors performed a unique heart surgery for the first time. The peculiarity is that the doctors were assisted by a robot, according to the First Medical Association of Lviv.

Disease

Last year, 44-year-old Serhii from Volyn was diagnosed with angina pectoris. At first, he was prescribed medication, which helped for a while.

However, a few months later, Serhii felt worse.

"I had such a burning pain and shortness of breath that I could not go up to the third floor. I forgot about physical activity altogether. I couldn't even help my wife carry heavy packages from the store to the car - it was beyond my strength," he says.

At St. Panteleimon Hospital, doctors diagnosed him with coronary heart disease. At the time of treatment, one of the main arteries in Serhii's heart was narrowed by 80%. That is, the blood supply to this vessel was almost absent.

Serhii's condition was pre-infarction, so he needed urgent heart surgery.

Surgery

The cardiac surgeons decided to operate on Serhii using the Da Vinci robot.

"This method of intervention has many advantages: small punctures instead of large incisions, precision, and quick rehabilitation. Despite this, no one in Ukraine has ever performed heart surgery using a robotic surgeon," the medical facility's website says.

Through four small punctures, the cardiac surgeons reached the heart muscle, separated the artery from the myocardial fibers, freed the vessel, and thus restored full blood supply.

The operation lasted three hours and was successful. On the fourth day, Serhii went home without any complaints.

"Our team is very happy! It was a long way to go to perform such an intervention, but we managed it. And now we are already preparing for the next robotic heart surgery," says Roman Domashych, the cardiac surgeon who operated.
