Today, on November 13, a Unified Center for the Identification of Deceased Persons began its operations in Ukraine. It involves various forensic methods and data exchange with international experts, according to a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
The center became the venue for an on-site meeting of the Deputy Head of the Office of the President, Iryna Vereshchuk, and the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Leonid Tymchenko.
Tymchenko emphasized that the center will enable identification in the most complex cases and will allow the names of those who gave their lives in the war with Russia to be established.
"A specialized institution will allow for examinations using various methods and the exchange of data with international colleagues, implementing the best global practices," the statement reads.
Thanks to the centralization of regional forensic bureaus into a single system under the Ministry of Health and cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the process of identifying deceased persons has become more efficient.
"The role of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in this process is extremely important: we not only ensure coordination but also guarantee that every person who died during the war will be identified and buried with dignity," Tymchenko said.
The Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution to launch an experimental project during which those who died as a result of Russian aggression will be identified using biometric data.
The system is intended to accelerate the identification procedures and ensure timely notification of families.
Ukraine has repeatedly repatriated the bodies of soldiers killed in the war with the occupiers. Afterward, specialists carry out the identification process, which includes forensic autopsies, investigative work, DNA examinations, and verification of every detail.
