Fallen Ukrainian soldiers to be identified using biometric data: Key changes

The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted a resolution to launch an experimental project under which victims of Russian aggression will be identified using biometric data, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
According to the ministry, such an experimental project is necessary for the rapid and accurate identification of fallen soldiers and civilians using biometric data. The system is intended to speed up identification procedures and ensure timely notification of families.
The main problem today is the identification of the bodies of servicemen and police officers repatriated to Ukraine. Traditional methods, such as DNA analysis, take a long time and do not always produce results. The use of fingerprints and facial images will significantly accelerate the process and create a more complete record of the deceased.
Within the framework of the project, authorized agencies will gain access to the National Biometric Verification and Identification System (NSBVI) and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This will allow verification of data on more than 26.6 million citizens and foreigners.
The process will include fingerprinting and photographing bodies, entering the data into databases, and conducting automatic checks. The results will be transmitted to investigative bodies for procedural processing.
In addition, fingerprinting of soldiers and police officers participating in combat is planned. These data will be used exclusively for locating the missing and identifying the deceased.
Return of the bodies of fallen Ukrainian defenders
Ukraine has repeatedly repatriated the bodies of soldiers killed in the war with Russia.
After their return, specialists carry out an identification procedure, which includes forensic autopsies, investigative work, DNA testing, and verification of every detail.
In particular, on September 18, it was reported that 1,000 bodies of the deceased had been returned to Ukraine.
