Ukrainians open Taras Shevchenko School in Budapest

Another official Ukrainian school, established by the local community, has started operating in Hungary. The new educational institution in Budapest has been named after Taras Shevchenko and, starting this academic year, is already admitting students to primary classes. In the future, it will develop into a full secondary school, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported.
Ukrainian schools in Hungary
The school was established under the State Self-Government of Ukrainians in Hungary with the support of the spokesperson of the Ukrainian nationality in the parliament, Liliana Hreksha.
The idea of creating a network of official Ukrainian schools in Hungary developed after negotiations between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Hungarian side in the summer of 2023.
The first institution was the Ukrainian-Hungarian Secondary School and Gymnasium, which, a few months after the agreements, received a state license. Currently, 360 children are studying there in the Ukrainian language.
This year, two more institutions officially received the status of schools:
-
Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian School in Budapest – primary classes with the prospect of developing into a secondary school;
-
School based on the educational complex Maszoret Avot – previously an educational center, now a full-fledged institution for about 300 children. The school also has a kindergarten. It was created through the cooperation of the Ukrainian organization Yednistand the Hungarian Autonomous Orthodox Jewish Community and will become a space for dialogue between three cultures – Ukrainian, Hungarian, and Jewish.
In addition to these three official schools, there are also several Ukrainian educational centers and Sunday schools in Hungary, where children from Ukrainian and mixed families study.

State support
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, headed by Andrii Sybiha, defines the development of Ukrainian communities and educational institutions abroad as one of its priorities. The Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary provides schools with textbooks and books.
On the eve of the new academic year, Ukrainian educational institutions were visited by Ambassador Fedir Shandor, head of the minister's patronage service Dmytro Tuzhanskyi, and Member of Parliament Yuliia Hryshyna, who joined the celebration of the Day of Knowledge.
Ukrainian schools in Hungary not only give children the opportunity to study in their native language but also become important centers for preserving identity, cultural diplomacy, and developing good neighborly relations between Ukraine and Hungary.
