President-elect Donald Trump is a strong leader, and the US congressional elections bring optimism for continued support of Ukraine, according to a statement by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at the Kyiv Economic Forum.

He recalled that there have been "positive conversations" between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, including in September during Zelenskyy's visit to the US. Zelenskyy also spoke with Trump over the phone last night.

"Just last night, there was another phone conversation, which President Zelenskyy also evaluated as entirely positive," the prime minister noted.

According to Shmyhal, this indicates "cautious optimism" about the future actions of the US as a key partner for Ukraine.

The prime minister believes that the American side may soon take "swift" steps regarding Ukraine, as many newly elected members of Congress are supportive of Ukraine.

US election results

On November 5, elections took place in the US. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump competed for the presidency, with Trump winning by a significant margin. The Republican Party also secured a majority in the Senate and may gain control of the House of Representatives.

Trump has already declared himself the new president of the United States. At his first post-election rally, he promised to end all wars.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his victory, and the two leaders held a phone conversation later that night.
