Representatives of the Ukrainian government have traveled to Washington to seek financial support for Ukraine for the coming year. They will also discuss investments and frozen Russian assets, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

According to the prime minister, he and the government team have begun their work today in Washington at the 2025 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"Thanks to the systematic work of the government team with our partners, Ukraine's funding needs for this year have been secured. During the Spring Meetings, we will discuss Ukraine’s needs for 2026," Shmyhal said.

The head of the government added that during the visit to Washington, the Ukrainian delegation has scheduled meetings with representatives of the US and EU financial and business sectors.

"Particular attention will be paid to recovery funding, the confiscation of frozen Russian assets, and attracting investments. We are working to strengthen Ukraine’s financial stability," the prime minister emphasized.

Talks on the minerals agreement

Shmyhal’s visit to the US is also linked to the upcoming agreement between the US and Ukraine on Ukrainian mineral resources.

On the evening of April 17, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko, together with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, signed a memorandum regarding this agreement.

The memorandum states that Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal is scheduled to visit Washington this week and meet with Bessent in order to “provide high-level support for concluding the technical discussions on the terms of the agreement.”

It also outlines that the US and Ukrainian negotiating teams must submit a progress report on the agreement by April 26. Discussions are expected to be finalized by then, so the agreement can be signed as soon as possible.

Additionally, on April 17, US President Donald Trump expressed his expectations that the minerals deal with Ukraine would be signed. He said the document could be finalized as early as April 24.

According to Trump, he believes Ukraine intends to fulfill the terms of the agreement.
