Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel are already undergoing training on Swedish Gripen fighter jets. This autumn, the training program will be significantly expanded, according to a statement by Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson.
New chapter for the Ukrainian Air Force
According to the Swedish minister, the introduction of Gripen aircraft into the Armed Forces of Ukraine will mark a "new chapter" in the country’s air defense history.
Ukraine is not simply receiving aviation, but is creating modern air forces capable of conducting combat operations and adapting to the most severe conditions.
"Training of Ukrainian pilots and technicians is already underway and will expand this autumn. Gripen C/D can be delivered with weapons such as IRIS-T, AMRAAM and the long-range Meteor missile. This is about aircraft, weapons, skills and sustainment," said Pål Jonson.
Delivery timelines and scope of assistance
The head of Sweden’s defense ministry clarified that the transfer of fighter jets is planned to begin early next year. This will happen immediately after the necessary decisions are made and official approvals are received.
In total, Sweden plans to donate 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine. In addition, the Ukrainian side plans to purchase up to 20 new Gripen E/F aircraft to develop its future air forces.
The goal of this cooperation is to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities as quickly as possible and lay the foundation for the modernization of its air force over the coming decades.
"A stronger Ukrainian air force makes Ukraine safer, Europe stronger and Russia's room for aggression smaller," the minister concluded.
Weapons and priorities for air defense
The Ministry of Defense previously identified the Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen as one of the key priorities for strengthening Ukraine’s Air Forces.
It is expected that this winter, Ukraine will receive the first 16 aircraft in the C and D variants from Sweden. Later, the purchase of more than two dozen of the latest E-series aircraft is planned.
In addition, the first batch of Swedish fighter jets will arrive in Ukraine together with long-range air-to-air Meteor missiles. The design of the Saab JAS 39 Gripen by Saab is known for its high effectiveness against Russian air defence systems.
The combination of these aircraft with Meteor missiles will create a so-called "long arm" for the Ukrainian Air Force. This weaponry will make it possible to effectively push Russian aircraft carrying guided aerial bombs away from the front line and provide significant protection for Ukrainian infantry.
