Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who was captured by Russian forces, has died. She was scheduled to be exchanged, according to a statement from Petro Yatsenko, a representative of the Coordinating Staff for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, as well as an exclusive comment from Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

"We conducted an internal investigation, and unfortunately, this information has been confirmed (regarding Roshchyna's death - ed.)," Yatsenko stated.

He clarified that Ukraine was working on securing the release of the journalist from Russian captivity. During this process, she was transferred from Taganrog to Moscow.

In turn, Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, commented to RBC-Ukraine that Roshchyna was on the exchange lists.

"Everything was done to bring her back. Moreover, preliminary agreements had been reached. Victoria was supposed to return home soon," Yusov emphasized.

According to him, the last known information about the journalist was that she was being prepared for her return to Ukraine. All other information is being verified and clarified.

Viktoria Roshchyna

Viktoria Roshchyna is a Ukrainian journalist who worked for Hromadske and also wrote for other Ukrainian media outlets. In 2022, she received the International Women's Media Foundation Award for Courage in Journalism.

It is known that after the start of the full-scale invasion, she was held by the Russian forces for 10 days in Berdyansk.

In 2023, she returned to the temporarily occupied territory. On July 25, she traveled from Ukraine to Poland for this purpose.

Roshchyna disappeared on August 3 in the temporarily occupied area, the last day she was in contact. The first new information about the journalist appeared in May 2024, when Russia acknowledged her detention.
