Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, stated that a country defending itself against aggression cannot be restricted in its defense. Ukraine is calling on its partners to lift restrictions on strikes against Russia.

"Under Article 51 of the UN Charter, a country defending itself from aggression cannot be restricted in its defense," he stated.

Sybiha emphasized that international law allows Ukraine to strike legitimate military targets on Russian territory. The minister urged partners not to limit Ukraine in its defense.

"Allow Ukraine to strike back and protect lives," the Foreign Minister declared.

It should be noted that Andriy Sybiha took over as Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs this week. Before this, he was the First Deputy Foreign Minister and replaced Dmytro Kuleba.

Background

It is important to recall that, in response to Russia's increased activity on the front lines, Ukraine's partners permitted the use of provided weapons to strike targets in Russia's border regions. The Allies justified this by stating that Ukrainian strikes could prevent advances by the occupiers.

However, Ukraine is urging its partners to lift restrictions so that long-range weapons can be used to strike military targets in Russia. Several partners claim they are not limiting Ukraine; for example, the United States and Germany have not made the necessary decisions.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the allies still have no consensus on lifting restrictions from Ukraine.

Why Ukraine is not being given "long-range capabilities" to strike targets in Russia is discussed in RBC-Ukraine's material.
