What was destroyed in Russia
The SBU's Alpha Center special forces, along with units of Ukraine's Defense Forces, carried out the overnight operation. Drones struck a number of key Russian military facilities.
The attack hit:
- Two drone storage warehouses;
- An FPV drone production facility;
- A Pantsir-S2 surface-to-air missile and gun system;
- A fuel and lubricant storage tank;
- A P-18 Terek radar station.
Large-scale fires were recorded at all of the struck locations.
Why it matters
The destruction of production facilities and storage sites significantly reduces the Russian military's ability to deploy drones against Ukraine.
The special operation was a direct response to Russia's massive drone attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukrainian cities.
Massive drone attack on Russia
Russia came under a large-scale drone attack on the night of September 12. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, as many as 12 Russian regions were targeted, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces reportedly deployed hundreds of drones.
In particular, Ukrainian drones struck the Tolyattikauchuk plant in Russia's Samara region on the night of September 12. The facility is located about 880 kilometers from Ukraine's border.
The plant produces synthetic rubber used by Russian forces in the missile industry. The strike sparked a major fire at the site.
