Ukrainian Forces received batch of Bohdana self-propelled howitzers funded by Denmark
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have received 18 Bohdana artillery systems, with their production financed by Denmark, reports Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.
The Danish Defense Minister visited Ukraine in March 2024. At that time, the main request was for increased production of weapons, including missiles, drones, and artillery.
Poulsen mentioned that it was the first deal they had made. In July, they had placed an order with Ukrainian manufacturers for the production of 18 Bohdana artillery systems, and those systems were delivered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces that weekend.
He also noted that manufacturing weapons in Ukraine is significantly cheaper than producing or purchasing them in the West, and maintaining their functionality is less expensive as well. Given this factor, Denmark is encouraging European countries to fund weapon production within Ukraine.
Former Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin, in turn, highlighted that each Ukrainian defense enterprise can produce more weapons. However, this requires adequate funding.
What is the Bohdana self-propelled artillery system
The Bohdana self-propelled howitzer is a Ukrainian artillery system with a 155 mm caliber gun, aligned with NATO standards. It is operated by a crew of five, reaches speeds of up to 80 km/h, and has a maximum firing range of 60 km.
Production of the Bohdana began in 2015 at the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Plant. The howitzer was officially adopted by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2023.
By April of this year, production of the Bohdana had increased to 8 units per month.
In July, Denmark financed and ordered the production of 18 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers.
