At the same time, on January 16 and 17, Russian forces carried out attacks directly in Kupiansk, as well as northeast of the city—in the areas of Dvorichna and Krasne Pershe, eastward toward Petropavlivka, Podol, and Kucherivka, and southeast near Pishchane and Kurylivka.
Ukrainian defense successes on the Pokrovsk direction
In addition, according to ISW, geolocated video footage from January 17 confirms advances by Ukrainian units northwest of Svitlo, located east of Pokrovsk in Donetsk region.

The report states that on January 16 and 17, Russian forces carried out attacks within Pokrovsk itself and nearby areas—specifically northwest near Hryshyne, north near Rodynske and Bilytske, northeast near Sukhetske, east toward Myrnohrad and Rivne, and southwest in the areas of Kotlyne, Udachne, and Molodetske.
Situation in the Dobropillia area
Separately, ISW analysts report that Ukrainian forces have recently advanced or at least maintained their positions in the tactical area of Dobropillia, southwest of Dorozhnye.

Situation on the front
Earlier, the head of communications for the Joint Forces Group, Viktor Trehubov, stated that Ukrainian forces are aware of Russian plans for January. According to him, the occupying forces are attempting to bypass Vovchansk and advance toward Lyman.
He also reported increased pressure from the enemy in the Kupiansk district. At the same time, all attempts by Russian units to break directly into the city end in failure. The defense forces maintain control of the situation and effectively stop enemy infiltration efforts.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to hold the northern part of Pokrovsk and block enemy advances on the approaches to Myrnohrad.
In addition, the Ukrainian defense forces have denied reports claiming that Russian troops captured the village of Minkivka in Donetsk region, emphasizing that the settlement remains under Ukrainian control.
