Ukrainian forces advance 5 km into Russia’s Kursk region during assault – ISW

During a new series of mechanized assaults in Russia’s Kursk region, Ukraine’s Defense Forces advanced up to five kilometers southeast of Sudzha, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports.
"Geolocated footage published on February 6 indicates that Ukrainian forces recently advanced southwest of Makhnovka and north and east of Cherkasskaya Konopelka along the 38K-028 Sudzha-Oboyan highway and seized Kolmakov and Fanaseyevka," ISW wrote.

The Institute for the Study of War also noted that Russia, in an attempt to expel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region, has gathered around 78,000 troops, including:
- 11,000 North Korean soldiers;
- elements of most of Russia's elite VDV (Airborne Forces) and naval infantry formations.
Operation in Kursk region
In the summer of 2024, Ukraine’s Defense Forces launched an offensive in the Kursk region, during which they successfully breached the enemy's border and took control of part of the region. Later, the Russians managed to reclaim certain territories, but Ukrainian forces continue to control dozens of settlements, including the city of Sudzha.
As the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine recently reported, during the operation in the Kursk region, Russia has already lost around 40,000 soldiers.
Furthermore, in early January, the Ukrainian military captured two North Korean soldiers for the first time.
