Ukrainian fighters have successfully captured two North Korean military personnel in Russia's Kursk region, a challenging feat, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Our soldiers captured North Korean military personnel in the Kursk region. These are two soldiers who, despite being wounded, survived and were transported to Kyiv, where they are now speaking with investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine," he said on Telegram.

The president highlighted the difficulty of this mission, as Russian forces and their North Korean counterparts often eliminate their wounded to prevent evidence of North Korea's involvement in the war against Ukraine.

"I am grateful to the soldiers of Tactical Group No. 84 from the Special Operations Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and our paratroopers, who captured these two. As with all prisoners of war, these two North Korean soldiers are receiving necessary medical assistance," Zelenskyy added.

Situation in the Kursk region

For several months, Ukrainian forces have maintained a foothold in the Kursk region. On January 5, the Defense Forces launched attacks on Russian positions in multiple directions in this area.

Currently, Russian troops, with support from North Korean soldiers, are attempting to reclaim positions previously occupied by Ukrainian forces. The Russians have made several attempts to advance. On December 14, Ukraine's Defense Intelligence reported that North Korean forces were preparing to storm Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region.

The condition of North Korean troops in the Kursk region is dire, to say the least. In early December, Russia deployed a general to the front lines in the Kursk region after complaints from North Korean soldiers about insufficient food rations.
