Ukrainian FM holds talks with Germany’s incoming Foreign Minister

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held his first conversation with Johann Wadephul, the incoming head of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. They discussed continued support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia, said Sybiha on X.
According to Sybiha, he congratulated Wadephul on his nomination as Germany’s Foreign Minister.
"I informed Johann about the battlefield situation and Ukraine's peace efforts. I appreciate his consistent personal stance in favor of our shared principles, as well as his reaffirmation today that the next German government will maintain and strengthen its support for Ukraine," Sybiha stated.
He added that he invited Wadephul to join EU foreign ministers during their visit to Ukraine on May 9. By that time, he will officially be the head of the German Foreign Ministry.
Sybiha thanked Germany for its principled support and said that Kyiv looks forward to close cooperation with the new government to restore a just peace in Ukraine, reinforce European security and sovereignty, and protect stability across the continent.
Merz to become chancellor
Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is expected to become Germany’s next chancellor on May 6, when the Bundestag convenes to vote on the appointment.
Johann Wadephul is likely to serve as foreign minister in Merz’s government, while Boris Pistorius is expected to remain defense minister.
Notably, Merz supports supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles, which Olaf Scholz categorically did not want to supply.
