The goal of the Ukrainian Defense Forces during operations on Russian territory in the border areas is, among other things, to reduce the enemy's ability to attack settlements within Ukrainian territory, reports Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

During a meeting in Kyiv with a delegation from the US House of Representatives on their visit to Ukraine, a Ukrainian official noted that he informed American partners about the current situation on the front, including in areas adjacent to Sumy.

"Our goals there are to clear the border area of Russian military threats and to prevent enemy shelling and attacks on our cities and villages," the minister explained.

The Sumy region borders three Russian regions - Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod - across the state border.

Additionally, Umerov expressed gratitude during the meeting with Congressmen Rob Wittman (Republican) and David Trone (Democrat) for the comprehensive bipartisan support from the US.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister added that the parties also discussed the critical needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

"I emphasized the need for quick approval from our allies for the full use of long-range weapons against targets on Russian territory. This is a matter of protecting our peaceful cities and villages," Umerov stressed.

He also mentioned that during the talks, the parties discussed preparations for the upcoming Ramstein meeting and how to make it as effective as possible.

Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation in the Kursk region

Since August 6, Ukrainian defenders have been conducting a military operation in the Kursk region of Russia. On August 20, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi announced that the Ukrainian army had expanded its control to 1,263 square kilometers in the region. It was also reported that the Ukrainian military has taken control of 93 settlements in Kursk.

Additionally, Ukrainian forces recently established a military command in the Kursk region.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that one of the objectives of the operation in this Russian region is to replenish the exchange fund.

On August 15, Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the head of the Presidential Office, emphasized that in the border regions of Russia, including Kursk, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are addressing only security-related tasks. He underscored that Ukraine is not interested in occupying these territories.
