Ukraine working on implementing joint protection against Russian missiles with NATO countries - Zelenskyy
Ukraine is working to get neighboring NATO countries to help it intercept Russian missiles and drones, according to the evening address of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to the President, on August 8, he held a meeting with international experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the military, the Defense Intelligence, and officials from the President's Office. The main topic of discussion was cooperation with NATO countries, including neighboring countries in the region that are part of the Alliance.
He noted that working together with NATO neighboring countries can add more security and stability to the region and all of Europe. Therefore, practical steps are needed.
"Today, we discussed our joint capabilities to defend against Russian missile and drone strikes — we are working on implementing this," Zelenskyy added.
What preceded
Earlier, Ukraine and Poland signed a bilateral security agreement, which includes the possibility of Polish troops intercepting drones and missiles over Ukrainian territory. This applies only to targets "heading towards Poland."
So far, there are no specific agreements regarding such assistance from Poland. However, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz mentioned that Poland would not shoot down missiles and drones over Ukraine without a corresponding NATO decision.
Against this backdrop, a few days ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the desire to discuss with NATO allies the formation of a coalition to destroy Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace.
