Czechia has canceled the modernization of T-72 tanks intended for Ukraine due to technical problems with the fire-control system, Novinky reports.
The modernization of Czech T-72M4 CZ tanks had been approved even before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The plan was to complete a full upgrade cycle before transferring the tanks, but problems with the accuracy of fire emerged during testing.
The Czech Ministry of Defense explained that the cause lies in faulty electronic components in the fire-control system that had not undergone prior evaluation. Repairs proved technically impossible, a conclusion also confirmed by the Italian equipment manufacturer.
As a result, the Ministry of Defense decided to terminate the modernization contract with the state-owned company VOP CZ and reimburse the costs identified by the audit.
Because of this, supplying the tanks to Ukraine is currently impossible, and Czechia will instead focus on providing modern Leopard tanks.
Around 30 T-72M4 CZ tanks remain in storage in Czechia.
Military aid from Czechia to Ukraine
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Czechia has supplied Ukraine with significant quantities of weapons and military equipment from its own stockpiles, including tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and aircraft.
Recently, Czech activists from the Skupina D group launched a fundraising campaign for interceptor drones for Ukraine. Since the beginning of the invasion, they have already delivered thousands of drones.
In October, Czechs raised about 595,000 dollars in just 48 hours to buy a Flamingo missile for Ukrainian defenders.
Czechia has also been part of a major program to supply artillery ammunition, coordinating efforts with other European countries.
In addition, Czechia supports Ukraine by training military personnel through joint programs, experience-sharing initiatives, and training for Ukrainian defenders.
