The Czech volunteer initiative Darek pro Putina (A Gift for Putin) raised funds within 48 hours to purchase a Flamingo missile for Ukrainian soldiers, organizer Martin Ondráček told Novinky about this in a comment.
"We hoped we could raise the amount in a week. But it happened in 48 hours, which is a record. It exceeded all our expectations," Ondráček said.
He added that he will hold a new round of negotiations with the manufacturer of the Flamingo missile, Fire Point. Ondráček said they have a deal that "will be a surprise for the people who contributed to buying the missile." He did not disclose further details.
The missile that ordinary Czechs raised the money for is to be nicknamed DANA 1 — in honor of the well-known scientist Dana Drábová.
The idea to dedicate the weapon to the famous Czech scientist was not accidental. Two years ago, Drábová told representatives of the initiative that she would not object if, in the future, some type of weapon were named after her.
Gift for Putin
The initiative A Gift for Putin was launched back in 2022 by investor Dalibor Dědek, with journalist Ondráček organizing it. On Tuesday, activists announced the start of a new fundraising campaign — to purchase a missile for Ukraine.
In July, Czechs under the A Gift for Putin initiative raised funds to buy six D-30 howitzers for Ukrainian defenders.
Czech volunteers have also collected money to purchase a Black Hawk helicopter for Ukraine.
