Protection until 2027 — And what comes next
This was stated by Ukraine’s Minister of Social Policy, Family and Unity, Denys Uliutin, following a meeting with European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner.
The central topic of the meeting was the possible end of the temporary protection regime for Ukrainians in the EU after March 2027.
Uliutin stressed that it is crucial for Ukraine to ensure that people do not end up in a legal vacuum. Approaches by different EU countries toward the status of Ukrainians should not differ significantly from one another.
"Our position is clear: we want Ukrainians to return home, but this must be a voluntary and informed decision. The key factor for such a decision remains security, which depends on the situation on the ground and our Armed Forces," Uliutin said.
Why Ukraine needs data on its citizens abroad
The minister also raised the issue of collecting information about Ukrainians staying under temporary protection in EU countries.
"In this context, the Minister stressed the importance of obtaining more detailed data on Ukrainians currently under temporary protection in EU countries, particularly on vulnerable groups, to support return planning and help communities prepare for future return flows," the statement said.
Earlier, we reported that the Cabinet of Ministers lifted the ban on female government officials traveling abroad. However, some restrictions still remain.
