Ukraine has called on NATO to issue an invitation to join the Alliance at the summit scheduled for December 3-4 in Brussels, according to Reuters.

In a letter seen by the agency, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha addressed his NATO counterparts.

I urge you to endorse the decision to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance as one of the outcomes of the NATO Foreign Ministerial Meeting on 3-4 December 2024," he emphasized in the letter.

According to Sybiha, an invitation to NATO would be an appropriate response from the allies to the ongoing escalation of the war started by Russia, the latest demonstration of which is the involvement of tens of thousands of North Korean troops and the use of Ukraine as a testing ground for new weapons.

Ukraine's NATO membership

Ukraine expected to receive an official invitation to join the Alliance at the NATO summit in Washington this July. However, this did not happen.

Kyiv insists on the adoption of a clear accession timeline, but no specific decisions have been made yet. The Alliance stresses that NATO's door remains open, but membership is not possible until the war ends.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy considers an invitation to NATO important for Ukraine's victory and seeks to secure it before a possible return of Donald Trump to the White House, fearing potential changes in US policy.
