Estonia has developed a revolutionary P4P interceptor drone that combines the vertical takeoff capability of a multicopter with the speed of a missile. Ukraine is already testing the new system to destroy fast jet-powered drones used by Russian forces, according to a LinkedIn post by the Estonian technology company Alatyr Group.
The main advantage of the P4P is its speed. The drone can accelerate up to 500 kilometers per hour, allowing it to catch up with jet-powered drones like the Shahed, which were previously beyond the reach of conventional interceptors.
The drone’s design is quite unusual. It features an elongated cylindrical fuselage that provides ideal aerodynamics during horizontal flight.
The system works in two stages:
- Four powerful electric motors lift the device vertically upward.
- After takeoff, a rocket booster engages, instantly accelerating the drone toward the target.
This makes the P4P a true hybrid, and it requires no special runways or bulky catapults.

Why Ukraine needs such drones
The threat in the air is constantly growing, as Russian forces are actively working on creating faster attack drones. The Estonian interceptor is designed precisely to shoot down such targets. Thanks to this drone, the Armed Forces of Ukraine gain a tool that can quickly close the distance to an enemy object.
The economics of war: An alternative to expensive missiles
Using costly anti-aircraft missiles against drones is not always cost-effective. The Estonian development offers a significantly lower price for neutralizing a target.
The combination of a rocket engine with electric motors makes the drone fast and maneuverable, which is especially important for intercepting UAVs.
The system is currently being refined. Detailed specifications and the number of units transferred are being kept secret.
What is known about Ukraine’s defense industry?
Ukraine is launching the Defense City program, under which domestic defense industry enterprises will receive benefits. These include tax breaks, simplified customs clearance, and state support.
In addition, media outlets have learned new details about Ukraine’s Vyrivniuvach guided bomb. Ukraine has completed development of its first glide bomb after nearly a year and a half of work.
