The United States will allocate more than $1 billion in humanitarian aid to millions of people around the world. Ukraine is among the countries that will receive these funds, according to the US Department of State.

How much funding will UNICEF and WFP receive

The funds will go to two UN organizations—the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

UNICEF will receive more than $218 million, and the WFP will receive more than $800 million.

These grants mark the second and third global tranches that the US Department of State has allocated to trusted implementing organizations.

Ukraine and other countries on recipients list

The funds will be used to support humanitarian operations in over 40 countries worldwide.

The statement notes significant humanitarian needs in Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Ukraine.

UNICEF and the WFP will allocate the funds to:

  • Food and nutrition
  • Health care
  • Child protection
  • Logistics
  • Water supply and sanitation.

Why US changed aid model

The United States introduced a new model for humanitarian aid in December 2025. At that time, the administration of US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum of understanding titled Humanitarian Reset with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

According to the State Department, the document made it possible to consolidate humanitarian activities under the leadership of a single local coordinator and reduce bureaucracy.

Meanwhile, G7 leaders agreed in a joint statement to strengthen military support for Ukraine. This includes additional air defense systems, long-range weapons, and possible licenses for foreign weapons production in Ukraine. In addition, the allies are preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia’s oil and gas sector.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that news regarding the funds withheld by the Pentagon would be released shortly. The amount in question was $400 million, which Congress had approved for aid to Ukraine. At the same time, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced that these funds had already been released following criticism from lawmakers.
