Ukraine has learned to shoot down 90% of enemy drones and nearly 80% of cruise missiles, even after a difficult winter during which Russia doubled the number of attacks, according to Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv and saw how Ukraine is protecting its skies.

Fedorov showed Pistorius a “small” air defense position and an energy facility in Kyiv that was damaged by Russian attacks.

The German defense minister was also shown:

  • Countermeasures against Shahed-type drones;
  • Mobile fire groups;
  • Technologies for destroying enemy targets.

According to Fedorov, last winter became one of the hardest for Ukraine.

“Russia nearly doubled the number of attacks. Over several months, the enemy launched more than 1,000 ballistic and cruise missiles and 27,000 Shahed-type drones. The main target was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and large-scale blackouts during frosts down to -20°C,” the minister said.

Fedorov called Germany one of the key leaders in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.

Berlin supplied missiles for the Patriot missile system, financed the PURL mechanism, and launched an initiative for the urgent transfer of missiles from European countries’ stockpiles during the most critical winter period.

“Each such missile saved lives and helped protect Ukraine’s energy system,” Fedorov emphasized.

Ukraine is currently intercepting about 90% of enemy drones and nearly 80% of cruise missiles.

Ballistic missiles remain the most difficult challenge. But together with Germany, Ukraine is working on solving this problem through additional Patriot missiles, the PURL mechanism, and the creation of its own European anti-ballistic capability.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that the frontline has stabilized, while the drone interception rate has reached 90% — Ukraine emerged from the hardest winter in a stronger position.

Rheinmetall, together with Destinus, is launching its own cruise missile production in the EU as an alternative to American counterparts.
