Ukraine wants to expedite the conclusion of a peace agreement with Russia by relying on US mediation, and President Donald Trump's personal involvement, Reuters reported, citing Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
The minister said that only Trump can bring the negotiations to a final deal, and that the most difficult issues must be resolved directly between Ukraine's and Russia's leaders.
Sybiha said that only a few of the most sensitive points remain out of the 20-item peace plan, including issues related to territory and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Kyiv has rejected Russia's demands for additional territorial concessions and insists on restoring control over the nuclear facility.
At the same time, Ukraine urges accelerating the talks to lock in progress before domestic political factors in the United States begin to influence the process, particularly the US congressional election campaign.
The media noted that although the latest round of negotiations did not produce a breakthrough, the two parties carried out a major prisoner exchange. The US has also proposed holding a new meeting in Miami, an offer Kyiv has accepted.
The foreign minister separately stressed that US security guarantees are critical to any peace agreement. According to him, Washington has confirmed its readiness to take part in mechanisms to guarantee and monitor a ceasefire.
"The foreign minister said some other countries beyond Britain and France, both already publicly committed, had confirmed their readiness to send troops to Ukraine as a deterrence force, but he declined to identify them," Reuters reported, citing Sybiha.
The minister also emphasized that Ukraine will not recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea or Donbas, and that any agreements about Ukraine made without Ukraine would be unacceptable to Kyiv.
"We will never recognise this. And it will be a violation of international law. This was not about Ukraine. It's about principle," he noted.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously said that the US is proposing that the parties end Russia's war against Ukraine by early summer and may apply diplomatic pressure in line with that timeline.
At the same time, Ukraine is not agreeing to a rushed ceasefire. Kyiv insists that security guarantees must be the core element of any agreement to end the war and must be signed before any other documents.
