Ukraine's new Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will visit Hungary. This will happen next week, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó.

“The head of Ukrainian diplomacy will arrive in Budapest next week. The law on national minorities is one of the key topics on the agenda,” said Szijjártó, who is currently attending the UN General Assembly session in New York.

Budapest claims that the Hungarian minority in Ukraine has been deprived of the right to receive education in their native language in schools after the fourth grade.

The Hungarian foreign minister expressed hope that this issue could be resolved with the new Ukrainian Foreign Minister.

Background

It should be noted that problems with Hungary regarding national minorities began after the education law came into force in 2017.

This initiative stipulated that representatives of national minorities in Ukraine could study in their native language only in primary school. After that, education would be conducted in Ukrainian in secondary and high school.

Hungary perceived this law as an attempt at assimilation. Subsequently, it repeatedly blocked EU initiatives aimed at supporting Ukraine.

Hungary has also refused to provide military assistance to Ukraine in defense against Russia.
