Ukraine's MoD tasks air defense with destroying targets before they reach Kyiv

The change in Russia’s terror tactics poses new challenges for the capital region. There are clear tasks for Ukraine’s air defense, according to a statement by Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara.
Khmara sets tasks for air defense
Ukraine’s Defense Minister visited command posts at Air Force military units in the Kyiv region.
According to Khmara, he and the military focused on discussing the combat operations process:
- Detecting and tracking targets,
- Making decisions,
- Destroying aerial threats.
The minister gave the air defenders a clear task: destroy Russian weapons before they reach the capital.
"Together, we identified which approaches need to be changed and how to strengthen Kyiv’s layered defense. Aviation, air defense, and mobile fire groups need to adapt their operations to the new realities," he said.
Khmara also spoke with combat pilots and air defense system operators about their assessment of the situation.
They also discussed the forces, capabilities, and needs of the units.
What about jet-powered Shaheds
Special attention at the meeting was devoted to jet-powered Shahed-type attack drones.
"Such targets are already being shot down. Now we need to scale up effective technological solutions and provide them to the units. We are working on this together with the military, Ukrainian manufacturers, and partners," Khmara said.
The minister also noted that Ukraine’s long-range strikes are consistently reducing Russia’s ability to wage war.
"At the same time, we will strengthen the protection of our cities and increase pressure on the enemy’s war machine," he assured.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that due to the growing number of Russian attacks, Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara postponed planned trips to Germany and Norway.
In addition, in early September, Yevhenii Khmara held a phone call with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
