Ukraine’s EU membership is disadvantageous for Hungary, as it "threatens its economy." A significant issue is that the European Union allegedly has to support Ukraine’s million-strong army, states Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, according to Magyar Nemzet.

According to him, Hungary has lost several billion euros over the past three years due to the war in Ukraine. Orbán claims that the country would not be facing such economic problems if the money sent to Ukraine had remained in the European economy.

"However, European leaders continue to pursue war and support Ukraine even against the will of the US leadership. We cannot finance and support Ukraine and the Ukrainian army without the United States," stated the Hungarian Prime Minister.

He highlighted a significant issue with the EU allegedly having to sustain Ukraine's million-strong army.

"The money they want to spend there, we could have spent at home. The money, including ours, is being taken to Ukraine in trucks," Orbán asserted.

He reminded that the European Commission had announced plans to admit Ukraine to the EU by 2030.

"The European People's Party, the mother party of the 'Tisza' party, wants to bring Ukraine into the EU, which will ruin Hungary's economy," Orbán stated, referring to the political force of his main political opponent, Péter Magyar.

The Prime Minister of Hungary said that Brussels is proposing to "jointly take a huge loan" to finance Ukraine, as EU leaders "know they cannot support it on their own."

He emphasized that "Europe's indebtedness must be prevented," and thus Hungary must "stay firm on the issue of Ukraine."

Orbán called on all Hungarians to express their opinion on Ukraine's EU membership and participate in the national survey.

"If it were beneficial for Hungarians, they would support Ukraine's membership, but our country would pay an additional price for Ukraine’s accession," he added.

Hungary blocks Ukraine's EU accession

Hungary is blocking the start of negotiations for Ukraine’s EU membership. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly stated that he does not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

At the same time, he organized a survey for Hungarians to gauge their opinion on Ukraine's EU membership.

On April 14, the Hungarian Tisza opposition party presented the results of its poll. According to the findings, 58% of the country's residents support Ukraine's EU membership. Over 1.1 million people participated in the survey.

Orbán himself boasted on social media that he voted against Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
