The United States has not yet discussed with Ukraine the necessity of holding elections by the end of 2025. However, if the team of US President Donald Trump raises this issue, Ukraine is ready for discussions, states Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, according to Suspilne.
What preceded
Recently, Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, stated that the US wants elections to be held in Ukraine if a ceasefire with Russia is reached.
However, at that time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s team stated that such a plan would be a failure
What Markarova said
"When this issue was theoretically discussed, in 2023-24, our position was that combat operations need to be concluded first. During the war, we will not be able to ensure full access to voting and candidacy," Markarova said.
Trump's statements on the war in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine. Initially, Trump set a 24-hour deadline for his statements. However, after his inauguration, Trump tasked the US special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, with ending the war in Ukraine within 100 days.
Recently, Kellogg expressed the view that simply assisting Ukraine will not force Russia to end the war. The price of oil must be reduced to $45 per barrel.
