'Ukraine's accession to the EU is in itself a guarantee of security' - Metsola

Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is itself a guarantee of security, and the European Parliament fully supports the country on this path, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada.
"Joining the European Union is a security guarantee in itself, and we are moving forward together on that path. Europe must match," she said.
According to Metsola, the next step is the formal opening of the so-called cluster regarding the foundation.
"And I am confident that we will find a way forward. And let me assure you that you will have the full support of the European Parliament to do this," Metsola said.
She emphasized that European integration is not an abstract concept, but concrete results. In particular, the roaming agreement announced in July is already benefiting citizens and businesses.
Metsola also reminded that Ukraine has already received €22.7 billion from the Ukraine Facility fund, and further financial support is expected for implementing reforms that will strengthen institutions and make them more resilient.
She also called it extremely important that the Verkhovna Rada continue progress in passing legislation, particularly related to the implementation of Ukraine’s plan.
"And these reforms matter, particularly those linked to the Ukrainian plan. The restoration of powers to your anti-corruption bodies was an important signal. And the Rada has shown great determination in adopting legislation to align with European Union standards. This is not just about ticking the boxes. It is about building the strong, transparent institutions that Ukrainians deserve. And that will be the foundation of Ukraine's future as a full member of the European Union," Metsola emphasized.
Metsola’s visit to Ukraine
Recall that today, September 17, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, arrived in Kyiv.
Speaking in the Verkhovna Rada, she announced the opening of the European Parliament representation in Kyiv.
It is also known that Metsola will hold meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, as well as with leaders of parliamentary factions and groups.
It is worth adding that the President of the European Parliament has already visited Ukraine several times since the beginning of the full-scale war, and her previous visit took place in May 2024.
