Ukrainian troops pushed Russian troops out of Kupiansk and took control of almost 90% of the city's territory, according to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Syrskyi took part in the 32nd meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which was held in a video conference format.

He informed the allies about the current situation on the front line, which remains difficult.

The commander-in-chief also gave specific examples of successful actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“Thanks to active search and strike operations, we managed to repel the occupiers from Kupiansk and take control of almost 90 percent of the city's territory,” Syrskyi said.

Ukrainian operation in Kupiansk

On December 12, Russian troops found themselves surrounded in Kupiansk, which, according to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, had already been “liberated” twice. The command of the Khartiia Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine announced a successful counterattack near Kupiansk.

At least 200 Russians were blocked in Kupiansk, and Ukrainian defenders managed to clear the Yuvileinyi residential area of Russian soldiers. In the course of the counteroffensive, the Russians lost more than 1,000 soldiers killed.

The operation was planned and has been ongoing since the autumn.

The Ukrainian military in Kupiansk also destroyed a gas pipeline through which Russian troops were trying to infiltrate the city. The Russians' path to the city has been blocked.

According to the military, active combat operations are continuing in Kupiansk, with surrounded Russian units putting up “very fierce” resistance. The Ukrainian Defense Forces are continuing their operation to destroy them.
