Ukraine needs security guarantees on par with NATO membership – Danish PM

If some NATO countries do not want to support Ukraine's membership in the Alliance, strong security guarantees must be developed. These guarantees should not fall short of Euro-Atlantic integration, states Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during the Munich Security Conference.
She reminded that she had urged the West to remove any "red lines" regarding assistance to Ukraine, as these only create many difficulties for the Ukrainian people.
According to Frederiksen, the best thing Western allies could offer Ukraine is NATO membership. Had Ukraine been part of the Alliance, the war would never have started. This is the "cheapest" way to protect transatlantic countries.
"I know it's a difficult path because some good big allies are not in favor of this. But then, at least, these good big allies have to discuss with the rest of us what kind of security guarantees can we then offer Ukraine that are as good as NATO membership," the Danish Prime Minister added.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
Recall that Ukraine sees NATO membership as a way to prevent a repeat Russian attack. However, NATO members are currently limiting themselves to promises that Ukraine's accession to the Alliance will happen in the future.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that if NATO does not accept Ukraine, there is already a Plan B.
This plan involves doubling the number of Ukrainian troops and increasing financial and military assistance from Western countries.
