Ukraine loses generating capacity over Russian shelling: How much can be restored by winter
Only a third of the generation lost due to Russian shelling of Ukraine's power system since March 22 will be restored by winter, according to the RBC-Ukraine's article "Minus nuclear plant capacity in two weeks: What awaits Ukraine over Russian energy strikes".
In total, about 6 GW of generation was lost due to the Russian shelling of Ukraine.
According to the Energy Research Center, 30-35% of hydro generation and 45-50% of thermal generation will be restored by winter.
"We think that 2 GW of thermal generation can be restored by the heating season if they (TPPs and CHPPs - ed.) are not shelled again," says Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Center.
Strikes on energy infrastructure
In recent weeks, the Russian army has resumed attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Russia has put 6 gigawatts of Ukraine's energy capacity out of commission with missile strikes over the past few weeks, destroying 80% of thermal generation (CHPP and TPP).
Ukraine will soon offer international partners, including the G7 countries, to participate in two plans to be implemented in parallel.
Plan A will concern the restoration of damaged energy facilities. This plan will be linked to the strengthening of air defense in Ukraine. Plan B is the construction of low-power power plants of any type - not just gas turbines.
