Ukraine knows what to do to bring EU accession closer
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine is preparing for negotiations regarding its accession to the European Union, according to president's evening address.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Kataryna Maternova, personally delivered the European Commission's report to him.
"Today, Ambassador Kataryna Maternova of the EU in Ukraine handed me the European Commission's report. Relevant consultations have already taken place with representatives of the government and the Verkhovna Rada regarding the legislative bills and reforms that form the basis of our state's transformation and our path towards the European Union. I hope that the European Commission will begin the implementation of its part of the joint effort as quickly as possible - the assessment of Ukraine's legislation's compliance with EU law," Zelenskyy announced.
The Ukrainian leader has also signed a decree to prepare for negotiations with the EU.
"Another aspect pertains to the EU. Today, I signed a decree to prepare for the negotiation process with the European Union. Specific points. Specific directives. We will approach the anticipated steps fully prepared," stated the President of Ukraine.
Ukraine's negotiations regarding EU accession
In its report, the European Commission recommended initiating negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. The decision will be made by the leaders of EU member states at the summit on December 14. Unanimous agreement among all leaders is required to open the negotiations.
Previously, Vice Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna stated to RBC-Ukraine that there is a clear understanding that the country could be fully prepared for EU membership within two years from the start of the negotiation process.
On November 8, President Zelenskyy of Ukraine signed a decree obliging Ukraine's authorities to prepare for accession negotiations with the EU.
